Description
Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-12 (usually: 11); Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 9; Pectoral fin rays: 14-17; Lateral line scales: 16-19 + 5-8; Gill rakers: 12-18. Body moderately deep. Snout pointed, moderately long; Four large canines on each side at front of upper jaw, and one pair anteriorly on lower jaw. Eye with modified scleral cornea forming a double pupil. Preopercular margin smooth. Lateral line interrupted; Head scaled except interorbital, snout and ventrally; A sheath of scales at base of dorsal and anal fins. Caudal fin slightly rounded. Max. length: 10.0 cm TL. Depth range: 1 - 35 m.

Color
Upper two-thirds of body with alternating stripes of purplish blue and orange-yellow; Lower part of body purplish orange; Caudal fin green; A small blue-edged black spot on upper part of caudal peduncle near caudal-fin base.

Etymology
Pseudocheilinus: from Greek, pseudes = false + from Greek, cheilos = lip.
hexataenia: from Latin prefix, hexa = six + from Latin, taenia = ribbon, band, tapeworm. Referring to six orange stripes on sides.
Original description: Cheilinus hexataenia Bleeker, 1857 - Type locality: Ambon Island, Molucca Islands, Indonesia.

Distribution
Red Sea; Indo-West Pacific: East Africa, Socotra, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line Islands and Johnson Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Australia, New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island.

Biology
Occurs in seaward reefs among coral branches. Also in clear coastal waters, dense coral habitats on shallow reef crest or slopes. Usually occurs in small loose groups. A shy species, usually swimming among the protection of coral branches. Feeds mainly on small crustaceans. Secretive. The pseudocheiline wrasses are distinct from all other labrids in having the central portion of the scleral cornea bisected into two subequal portions.
